5 tips for staying sane while working from home

April 6, 2020

I am by no means an expert on everything that’s going on right now with this 2020 Corona Virus, but what I do know is I LOVE ROUTINE. It helps me to feel grounded and calm while I go about my day.

Depending on when you read this, we may be in the heat of this 2020 virus or it may be long behind us. However, one thing that won’t go away in our future is change and uncertainty. There will be seasons of life where everything is crazy and hectic and you have no idea how to take care of your own health. That’s when it becomes more important than ever to create a routine that keeps you grounded and serves as a continued reminder to take care of yourself.

So whether you’re reading this for tips for staying sane while working from home or just going through a busy season of life, these tips will serve you either way.  So if this new schedule of less work or work from home life is making you go a little crazy, here are a 5 tips that have worked for me:

Still get dressed and ready for the day

This is my #1 motivator for being more productive at home. Whether it’s a workday or weekend, if I shower, get dressed (at least jeans instead of sweats!), do my hair and makeup, I am much more productive. It simply sets the tone from the beginning of the day that you’re ready to take on the day!

Eat meals on a regular schedule

If you find yourself in the kitchen every 1-2 hours looking for a snack while at home, take a look at your meals. Are you grazing all day on snacks or are you taking the time to prepare 2-3 balanced meals? A balanced meal includes high fiber carbs, protein, and healthy fats. If you need some simple meal ideas, check out my recent post for 3 Ingredient Meals.

Use the time you’d normally be driving/commuting to work wisely

I have taken this opportunity to exercise in the morning! Or you could use it to spend some quiet time in prayer, meditation, journaling, etc. Think of something you’ve really been wanting to do for a while but haven’t. Be very intentional with this time since it’s likely only 20-60 minutes long.

Keep to a regular sleep schedule

If you don’t have a strict time of when you have to start working for the day, you may be tempted to stay up late and sleep in. Don’t do this! Maintain a normal circadian rhythm by sleeping during the night and waking when the sun is up. This will help normalize blood sugars, reduce sugar cravings, and improve energy levels throughout the day.

Schedule breaks in your day

It’s unrealistic to expect yourself to be fully focused and productive for 8-10 hours straight. Schedule breaks for meals, stretching your body, and taking a mental break to recharge. You’ll be much more productive and produce higher quality work if you take breaks throughout the day.
