Chocolate Brownie Hummus

BROWNIES ARE LIFE. If I had to pick only one dessert to eat the rest of my life it would be brownies. The strange part is, I’m not that good at making homemade brownies so I usually stick to just the box mix. It’s less effort and and usually taste better anyways.

Life is about balance, you can’t always eat salad and grilled chicken breast and expect to enjoy life to the fullest. Sometimes you’re eating really “healthy” and other times, you eat for pure enjoyment, not health. That’s ok, you shouldn’t feel guilty about allowing yourself to NOT be perfect all the time.

Today’s recipe is one about the happy medium place. You get a taste for your favorite guilty pleasure *aka brownies* but with some sneaky health benefits *protein and fiber from chickpeas*!

This Chocolate Brownie Hummus is an easy recipe to mix up at the last minute to take to work and social gatherings and pairs nicely with fruit, pretzels, or grahams. I think it could even replace Nutella *which is full of horrible trans fats* on your whole grain toast. Or for a fiber packed breakfast, try a slice of whole grain toast topped with this hummus and my 2 Ingredient Jam!

In this recipe, you’ll find that I removed the skins from the chickpeas. This is easily done by pinching one end of the chickpea and it slides right off. To do the whole can it took me about 20 minutes. This makes for a smoother texture, but if you’re really pressed for time you could skip this step.  I absolutely love my Ninja Auto-iQ Blender for this recipe because it’s powerful to get the job done no matter what I’ve tried to make, but a better price than other popular blenders/food processors.

To up the smoothness factor a bit I also added 2 Tbsp oil. I don’t typically cook with canola oil but is it a neutral tasting oil which is what you’re wanting. You want a smooth texture without incorporating other flavors. If using olive oil, I don’t recommend extra virgin olive oil because of the flavor, but you can try lite olive oil. Lite in this case doesn’t mean light on calories or fat, it simply means light on flavor.

I hope you enjoy this sweet treat and let me know in the comments if you want to see more sweet or savory hummus recipes!
