Treat Yo Self: My Favorite Non-Food Rewards

September 18, 2018

Now I know I’m not the only one that just got inspired to binge watch Parks and Recreation after reading this title. For those of you who don’t know this reference, “treat yo self” is from one of my favorite TV shows, Parks and Recreation.

Once a year, two of the main characters Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle buy whatever they want for themselves. You can watch the video below to fully appreciate this reference.

Now if fine leather goods and velvet slippies aren’t really your thing, don’t worry. I’ve got you covered.

I know how common it is to want to treat yo self with food when things are going well and you’re meeting your goals. However, food is our body’s source of fuel, not a reward for checking things off your to do list.

So here are my ideas to treat yo self, no food required.

Mini Goal Rewards

Goals that can be achieved in 1-2 weeks

  • Deposit $5-10 in the “Big Goal Reward” fund to use later
  • Go to a movie
  • Take a bubble bath or foot soak
  • Relax with a cooling face mask
  • Buy some new makeup. Or for those guys out there, get that cool new beard brush you’ve been looking at.
  • Go thrift shopping
  • Buy supplies or tool for a new project
  • Update your playlist with new music
  • Go for a hike/walk in a new neighborhood or park
  • Relax with a good book (I’m obsessed with my Kindle!!)
  • Try a new free exercise class

Mid-Level Goal Rewards

Goals that can be achieved in 1-2 months

  • Deposit $40-50 in the “Big Goal Reward” fund to use later
  • Buy new workout clothes
  • Get a massage
  • Get a manicure/pedicure
  • Take a “personal day” from work to do whatever you want
  • Buy a flower arrangement for yourself
  • Get a new house plant – Snake plants, ferns, aloe, and air plants are hard to kill if you have a black thumb!
  • Buy a new kitchen tool or small appliance
  • Go camping
  • Spend a day at the beach
  • Try a new exercise format/class/equipment
  • Buy a hammock and spend the day relaxing outside
  • Subscribe to a new magazine

Big Goal Rewards

Goals that will take a lot of hard work and dedication for your long term health

  • Take a vacation
  • Buy a new piece of jewelry
  • New workout equipment
  • New piece of fitness tracking technology (example: Fitbit)
  • Electronic gadgets
  • New furniture for the house
  • Adopt a pet
  • Landscape your house

Let me know in the comments below some of your favorite ways to treat yo’ self when you’re crushin’  your goals!
